About Us

Penny and Hamish (aka Monty) bought Waiata in 2015.  At the time the block was overgrown and almost impenetrable.  Penny had a vision.  Monty thought she was crazy!  But he knew his wife well and was eventually persuaded that they could make Waiata the stunning property it is today.

There followed many years of hard work, clearing the land and landscaping it to meet their dream of a natural bush block - but with a lot less bush!  For 8 years, they lived in the 'Shouse' - as the shed Monty built them became known.  Penny's willingness to deal with an outdoor bathroom for so long, is testament to her adaptability - and love for her husband.

In 2024 they finally built their dream home. The property sits to one side of the block, so leaves plenty of space for weddings.  The 'Shouse' has been cleared and is now a useful undercover space for the times when the NZ weather interferes with couples' plans to wed in the elements!

The Weddings at Waiata Personality

If Weddings at Waiata were a person, you'd find us natural, simple, and fresh. We're friendly, warm, and a little bit fun, always caring, loving, and bubbly. We are a loveable team who enjoys making your wedding experience as special as it can be!

The Meaning of Marriage

Penny has been married to Monty for over 35 years, so she knows a bit about marriage herself!  She describes marriage as being like a garden (did we mention she's also a keen gardener?).  It needs to be watered regularly, pruned and fed.  There are times when it blooms rampantly, and you are astounded by its beauty.  Sometimes it dies back a bit, and you wonder if it will ever truly flourish again.  But with love and care, somehow it comes back to life and continues to provide you joy.
